It Isn’t Meant to Be Easy

What does it take to get better?  Even more, what does ‘get better’ mean?  It means something different to each of us-whether it is getting rid of bands for pull-ups, not doing push-ups on our knees, getting double unders, doing all RX WOD’s, getting a muscle-up, getting a faster time on a “lady”, and the list goes on and on!

What we do know in the world of CrossFit, getting better means improving ourselves on a daily basis.  CrossFit gets us more fit, teaches us ways to improve our health now & for the future, & teaches us mental & physical toughness many of us haven’t known before.  HOWEVER, just showing up to CrossFit Prevail DOESN’T get the job done.  CrossFit wouldn’t be what it is if it was that easy.  We need to constantly work on all elements to ‘better’ ourselves & improve our overall wellness.

When it comes to mental & physical toughness, the only one that can truly make that better is YOU.  Your Coaches can yell, scream, cheer as much as they want but it is still YOU that needs to do the work.  We push you to challenge yourself every class.  Just taking that challenge though doesn’t always mean you will get better.  Following through with that challenge is what makes us better.

How can YOU work on this toughness element of being “better”?  Think of a workout that has squats.  If you cheat yourself on your depth just to get thru the WOD faster, what have you gained?  If you ‘slide on your #’s’ what have you gained? Nothing!  You are just cheating yourself.  SO, no matter what the movement is, take the time to DO IT RIGHT, to the best of your ability, & keep practicing them during Cash Out/Skill Time/Before Class/Open Hour on the weekends so you can continually get better & better!

Another example where this can happen is in a Tabata Workout say with push-ups.  Too many times people are willing to scale themselves mid WOD to push-ups from their knees just because they want to keep their score high.  Banging out knee push-ups, when in fact you can do 1 or 2 perfect plank push-ups, will not make you better at push-ups or any other pushing/pressing movement we do.  It may give you a less desirable score by pushing yourself, but that is how you get better.  Sometimes you need to suck it up & take that low score to actually improve upon a movement & your general fitness.

Trust us, we know this may be discouraging and/or pure frustrating at times.  We have all been there at some point.  Maybe it was being the last one to finish the WOD or maybe you are injured & worried to scale, maybe your back tightened up in the middle of Back Squats, or your hamstring cramped up doing a run.  It will happen.  You need to swallow your pride & stick out every workout not matter how tough it is & not matter how long it will take, if you are medically able to.  We can promise you that if you do this it will not only make you “better” at CrossFit but “better” in every sense of the word!

Mental & Physical Toughness doesn’t just happen by showing up.

CrossFit doesn’t make us Tougher, Working HARD at it does!
