Barbell Etiquette

Laughing

Guest Blogger:  Coach Kirsten (Thanks for this great post!)

We don’t have many rules around the gym, but if we do, they are generally focused around your safety. Obviously we toss around lots of weight every day at the gym and we don’t want any stupid injuries. So here are some guidelines on Barbell Etiquette.

Why do we have WOD Books?

wodbook-w450-h450

We get asked sometimes why we have WOD books to keep track of everything?  The answer is simple--It is the most efficient way to track your progress in the gym & truly be able to measure how well you are doing & progressing.  The data doesn't lie.

For example, if someone sets a one rep max of 100# on their Back Squat but then doesn't come in for a few weeks because they aren't committed or just got lazy, when it is time to set a new one rep max for those Back Squats, you better bet their # is not going to go up!  They haven't taken the time to commit to working it for that Strength cycle & work on getting...

Fiber

Laughing

When you read the word Fiber what comes directly to your mind?  The media has done a great job of talking about the kind of fiber that is found in grains such as whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread, etc.

However, do you know that there is a 'better kind of fiber' for your body?  One that can help you reduce your risk of coronary heart disease & cancer & also help you lose weight?  This 'better fiber' plays a key role in your digestive health & helps you to feel fuller longer so you don't eat as much.

Sadly, it is estimated that only 5% of society consumes the daily...

I know many of us follow the www.paleomg.com website & enjoy the author Juli Bauer & her awesome sense of humor.  If you don't know who she is, I can tell you most women that do think she is a Bad *SS!   She wrote this article & I LOVE it!!  Please take a few quick moments to read it & remember it when YOU walk into the gym!

Scaling

Bloggers:  Brandon & Kristina

Scaling is an important aspect of CrossFit, but one that’s often misunderstood. If you scale correctly, you will increase your work capacity more efficiently than attempting to complete workouts as prescribed before you are ready for them. Properly lowering the weights & achieving a faster time will actually yield a higher level of power.  There is NO shame in Scaling based on your CrossFit experience, an injury, pregnancy, skills & abilities, history, goals, needs, or you just having an ‘off day’.

More Sleep=Muscle Gain & Improved Performance

sleep-w200-h200

Thanks to Coach Dan for finding this great article from www.charlespoliquin.com

Get more sleep if you want to gain muscle and improve your athletic performance. Research shows that lack of sleep activates the immune system, causing an inflammatory response in the body that leads to muscle breakdown and a host of other negative physiological effects that will compromise your performance.

Why Olympic Weightlifting Shoes?

Tongue out

When you walk into any shoe store or sporting good store, you have a ton of shoes to pick from.  How do you pick the right ones?  If they are a significant amount of money you might even contemplate the 'necessity' of them.

When you CrossFit there are SO many shoes you can choose from!  Just ask some of our 'seasoned veterans' who have more shoes than they know what to do with!!

Helping to Stop Childhood Obesity

obese-w480-h250

The question of how to nourish our children so they develop into healthy adults is one of the most important questions we can ask.

The numbers of overweight & obese children worldwide are expected to climb drastically every year & the projections are that more than 50% of children in North & South America are projected to be overweight & 15% will be obese.

Even worse I saw an even more startling fact that said there are 9 million kids over the age of 6 that are obese!!  Imagine the uphill battle they will face when they are old enough to realize they are fat & they need to fix the mess that was...

It Isn’t Meant to Be Easy

What does it take to get better?  Even more, what does ‘get better’ mean?  It means something different to each of us-whether it is getting rid of bands for pull-ups, not doing push-ups on our knees, getting double unders, doing all RX WOD’s, getting a muscle-up, getting a faster time on a “lady”, and the list goes on and on!

What we do know in the world of CrossFit, getting better means improving ourselves on a daily basis.  CrossFit gets us more fit...

Essential Fatty Acids

We constantly hear the words “Omega-3”, “Fish Oil”, “Omega-6”, “Flax Oil”, “Olive Oil”, “Krill Oil”, and others thrown about by the media and advertisers. It gets confusing as to what the names mean and which of them are good for your health.

Basically there are two essential fatty acids that we must ingest. We can't make them. One is the omega-6 fatty acid known as cis-linoleic acid (found mainly in seed oils) and the other is the omega-3 fatty acid known as alpha linolenic acid (found in fish, nuts, flax and products of animals...
